Measurement of functional residual capacity during mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure. A comparison between closed and an open-circuit helium dilution technique.

چکیده
Expired volume was measured with a Godart pneumotachograph at the expiration port of the ventilator (Fig 1, tracing 5). We measured the concentration of helium with a katharometer (Codart, response time 0.1 see), at the expiration port of a Siemens-Elema-900 ventilator. From equations 2 and 3, it follows that absolute calibration of the helium meter is not necessary; only linearity of the meter is innportant. The linearity of the katharometer has been checked with different concentrations of helium in gas mixtures, comparable to those used in patients. An example of a helium washout curve is shown in tracing 8 of Figure 1. A mixture of 50 percent helium in oxygen was administered to the patient via the ventilator, by temporarily con-

Functional residual capacity during anaesthesia. I: Methodology.
The helium dilution technique for the measurement of functional residual capacity (FRC) is reviewed with special reference to anaesthesia. A modification is described which permits measurements to be made during intermittent positive pressure ventilation. This modification causes minimal interference with the circuit as it is used for spontaneous respiration. The measuring circuit may be altern...
متن کاملComparison of helium dilution and plethysmographic lung volumes in pregnant women.
The multibreath helium equilibration method is the technique recommended for routine measurement of static lung volumes in normal subjects. However, pregnancy could be an exception to this general rule, due to airway closure during the second half of gestation. The aim of this study was to compare the measurements of lung volumes by plethysmography and helium dilution during pregnancy. Twenty t...
متن کاملComparison of the Effects of Open and Closed Endotracheal Suction on Cardiovascular and Ventilation Parameters for Patients Undergoing Mechanical Ventilation
Background and Objectives: Suction is a necessary and common method which aids in the release of secretion from the respiratory system for the patients who have undergone mechanical ventilation. One of the most common complications of suction is hypoxemia which causes dysrhythmia and death. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of open and closed-endotracheal suction on cardiov...
متن کاملNitrogen washout/washin, helium dilution and computed tomography in the assessment of end expiratory lung volume
Introduction End expiratory lung volume (EELV) measurement in the clinical setting is routinely performed using the helium dilution technique. A ventilator that implements a simplified version of the nitrogen washout/washin technique is now available. We compared the EELV measured by spiral computed tomography (CT) taken as gold standard with the lung volume measured with the modified nitrogen ...
متن کاملRespiratory mechanics and lung stress/strain in children with acute respiratory distress syndrome
BACKGROUND In sedated and paralyzed children with acute respiratory failure, the compliance of respiratory system and functional residual capacity were significantly reduced compared with healthy subjects. However, no major studies in children with ARDS have investigated the role of different levels of PEEP and tidal volume on the partitioned respiratory mechanic (lung and chest wall), stress (...
